Overview
P.A.W.A Mind Matters is a mental health and wellbeing initiative under the Powerful African Women of Ayrshire (P.A.W.A). This project was born out of the understanding that mental health is just as important as physical health — especially within Black and African communities, where it is often under-discussed and under-supported due to stigma, cultural perceptions, or lack of access to tailored services.
Purpose of the Project
The project is focused on creating safe spaces, raising awareness, and providing supportive tools to help individuals from African and minority backgrounds in Ayrshire navigate emotional and mental challenges confidently and without shame.
It aims to:
Break the stigma around mental health in African communities
Encourage open dialogue through culturally sensitive conversations
Offer practical mental wellbeing support, education, and referral pathways
Empower individuals to take ownership of their emotional wellbeing
Key Activities Include:
Community mental health workshops with trained professionals
Peer support groups and storytelling sessions
Wellbeing walks, group relaxation activities, and creative therapy sessions
One-on-one check-ins and signposting to local health services
Training sessions for community leaders to recognize and respond to mental health concerns
Target Audience
The project primarily serves:
Women of African descent
Youth and young adults in African families
Community members who are often isolated or underserved in traditional health systems
Why It Matters
P.A.W.A Mind Matters addresses the cultural gaps in mental health awareness and support by ensuring services are community-led, culturally relevant, and accessible. It reinforces the message that “It’s okay not to be okay” — and there is strength in seeking support
